First of all, is your slow computer a brand new one or have you been using it for some time already? If your newly purchased computer is slow then please pass on to the section Why is my new computer so slow?

If you have been using your computer for some time and it was running perfect but one day it suddenly it became slow, without an apparent reason, then pass on to the section Why is My Computer So Slow All of a Sudden?

If your computer has become slow over time then follow the steps suggested below.

  1. Is your computer not just slow but constantly freezing? Have you ever had startup problems with error messages saying that the hard disk was not detected? Does your computer initiate hard disk check during startup and reports disk errors and recovering data from damaged clusters? If so, take care of the data stored on your disk immediately. All of the above may be a sign of the upcoming hard disk crash. Slow computer can be easily fixed, recovering data from a damaged hard disk is not easy and the procedure is very costly. If that’s not your case pass on to the next steps.

  2. Does your computer display annoying error messages? If so, you computer may be infected with viruses or trojans, which also slow you computer performance. Unfortunately, today avoiding suspicious email attachments or running suspicious applications does not mean that you are safe from malicious invaders. Check your computer for viruses and trojans. It is highly recommended to use Reimage for this purpose because it not not detects and removes viruses and trojans but also repairs the damage to the system done by a virus (with no other program does). In addition, it removes most of other problems that cause slow computer performance.

  3. Do you often install and delete programs or change program settings? If so, your registry may become corrupt with obsolete references that slow your computer performance both at startup and during your work. Check you registry for invalid entries and clear them out. It is recommended to use specialized software for this purpose because damaging the registry during manual repair may disable your computer.

  4. Make sure your computer is not overheating. Laptops are much more exposed to this problem because of less effective ventilation. If you don’t know how to check your computer’s temperature use specialized tools that check your overall computer’s health, including temperature, and provide detailed reports. If your laptop’s fan is constantly running and loud you may want to clean the dust out of your laptop. Many users successfully do this procedure with the help of a vacuum cleaner. However, for better cleaning you may have to dismantle your laptop to get a better access to dusty parts.

  5. Make sure you are not running out of disk space. Low disk space is one of the causes of slow computer performance. Use Disk Cleanup tool or delete large obsolete or unnecessary files.

  6. Do you often save and delete many files? Does your computer run out of RAM and use virtual memory? This makes you hard disk fragmented. On a fragmented disk, pieces of files are scattered all of over the disk instead of being written sequentially. Disk fragmentation is a significant slow down because the read\write head of the hard disk has to move all over the disk to seek for the file’s fragments. Use specialized utilities to check and defragment your hard disk.

  7. How many programs do you have in your Startup tray? They all slow down you computer and add annoying seconds or even minutes to startup. Remove the ones you don’t really need from Startup. See Slow Computer Startup page for instructions regarding startup applications.
