Very slow computer and Virus

This doesn’t sound new, however, viruses and a very frequent cause of slow PC performance. Malware scan is a must. Malware may be devouring your computer resources making you computer slow, mass-sending spam messages without you knowing about it, which also slows down your Internet speed and uses bandwidth, or even worse - damage the information on your computer, corrupt your system you even steal your personal data. If your system has been damaged by a virus or other malware you will either have to reinstall the system or use specialized tools to fix the damage done by a virus.

Determine the Culprit Process

Every application running in you computer uses its share of your computer resources. Sometimes just one program or even process (a part of a program) may take almost 100% of your CPU and memory. For example, graphic editors like Adobe Photoshop, especially when you edit a large file. Sometimes, merely opening a large graphic file takes a few minutes! Now and then, I used to have such issues with Firefox browser with was invisibly running several processes and my computer was running very slow. I didn’t know it was firefox until I opened task manager. Killing the processes returned my computer to it’s normal performance speed. To open Task Manager, right-click the taskbar and click Start Task Manager. Click the Processes tab. Here you will see how much of your resources is given to each process. Killing a culprit process will release resources. However, be careful about killing processes! Don’t do it if you don’t know for sure you system needs this one to run properly. Killing an essential system process may cause Windows to crash.

Turn off startup apps and craplets

If you computer is running very slow during and after startup, the problem could be in startup apps and craplets, the applications you don’t actually use but feed them you CPU and memory. Read what to do if you computer is very slow at startup

Keep multitasking to minimum or…upgrade your computer!

Few users would like to read that, but your computer may be simply not powerful enough to run several programs at a time. If you upgraded Windows to Vista and your PC is running very slow now, you may need to add memory. A computer that was showing decent performance with XP may not do so with Vista (even if you turned off startup applications and remove crapware, as was suggested above).

Take notes

Is your computer is very slow not all the time but only after certain event, like opening a program, visiting a site, etc, take a note of that, the information may help you find the cause and you may have to avoid such actions in future, kill the process or at least find out where to dig furhter. This tactics usually helps me find out why my computer is so slow.

My computer is very slow and freezes

That’s an ominous sign with either means that your hard disk is about to die, you system files were damaged, or, again, you have a virus. Anyway, backup your data, run an antivirus scan and a system fix tool that replaces damaged files with healthy ones.
